“When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.“
This quote reminds me of another saying that says something akin to, “if you’re not growing, you’re dying.” Isn’t one of the major goals of life to constantly strive to improve? To grow and change in a positive manner? I think so.
When you decide to become a better version of yourself, it ripples into every other aspect of your life, especially your relationships. Have you ever heard the saying, “you are the sum of the 5 people you hang around with most”? If that’s true, then you are part of the sum that influences those that spend the most amount of time with you.
It might not be as direct as if you make a healthy meal, the rest of the family is eating it too therefore, you have had an effect on them. That’s obvious. It’s easy to see the obvious repercussions of our decisions (although not always, and some people seem blind to the consequences of their actions, but that’s another discussion). What about what we maybe don’t see…?
We have a home gym in our garage. It’s a really nice set up: squat rack, pull up bars, barbells, dumbbells, bumper plates, air dyne, prowler, kettlebells… we have most any piece of equipment you could want. We workout in our garage gym 5-7 days per week. We don’t push our kids to workout, but we will invite them sometimes, and if they express interest we will go out and coach them or lift with them. The obvious effect of us having a home gym is that our kids see us workout, and see that it’s something you do as part of your healthy habits and routine.
What might not be as obvious are the other, even more profound effects of our home gym. Not only have our kids gotten into the habit of lifting anywhere from 2-5 days per week, but their friends in the neighborhood have starting lifting with them. Not only are we having a profound and lasting impact on our own kids’ health, we now are impacting the health and live’s of several other children. Not only that, but how that could trickle down to their future children, and grandchildren…
BJ Palmer, the developer of chiropractic said, “we never know how far reaching something we may think, say, or do today might affect the lives of millions tomorrow.” How true. And knowing that, and keeping that in the forefront of your mind, what decisions can you make today that could affection millions tomorrow?
Our greatest gift is health. That is the greatest thing we can give not only ourselves, but our children and future generations as well. What if you instilled in your children that health is an investment, not a reaction? What if you were proactive about your health, rather than reactive? If you showed them how to move their body, fuel their body, and maintain their body.
Seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis teaches your children that it is worthwhile to invest both time and money into maintaining their body. They should invest in their body, in their health. Improve yourself, and improve everything around you.
