It’s a somewhat common question people have about chiropractic. They heard that once you start going to a chiropractor you have to go forever. The quick answer is that you go to a chiropractor for as long as you want to. You don’t “have” to do anything, but let’s dig a little deeper as to why you might want to have your spine checked regularly for the rest of your life.

When I get asked this question, I like to answer it with one of my own: once you start eating healthy, does that mean you have to eat healthy forever? or once you start working out, does that mean you have to workout forever? It makes the question seem a little silly, doesn’t it?

Having your spine checked regularly should be part of a healthy lifestyle. Simply put, your body works better when it is free of vertebral subluxation. Your body works with greater coordination, harmony, and ease. This is a good thing no matter who you are, or where you are at health-wise/quality of life-wise.

I think the confusion comes because people think that you go to a chiropractor to fix some problem you are having. While it is true that a variety of people with a myriad of different issues do get well under chiropractic care, it’s really not what chiropractic is about.

You can eat healthy and exercise because you are trying to lose weight, but you can also eat healthy and exercise because it is good for you, and helps you to build and maintain a strong, healthy body. Let’s say you are overweight and start to eat better and move your body more to lose weight. The pounds come off, and you reach your goal! Now what? Do you stop eating and exercising well? I suppose you can, but what do you think is going to happen?

The smart thing to do would be to continue with your healthy practices so you can continue to enjoy your healthier body. By continuing you will also continue to build upon the healthy frame you established, and experience even greater health benefits aside from just seeing a smaller number on the scale. The scale is just one measurement to go off, what about the myriad of other health benefits that come along?

You get the most out of healthy habits if you treat them as actual habits: something you do on a consistent and regular basis. Chiropractic is no different. You get the most out of it if you use it on a consistent and regular basis. Each adjustment builds on the previous one, much akin to how each workout builds on the one before it.

Sure, you can go to a chiropractor for a brief period of time and stop. Just like you can eat healthy for a month and then stop. Just like you can get two good nights of sleep and then run yourself into the ground the rest of the week. I suppose those things are better than nothing, but wouldn’t you be better off doing them consistently from this day forward?

This practice is set up to allow people to make regular chiropractic care a part of their healthy lifestyle. The average chiropractor isn’t set up to make getting regular chiropractic care sustainable. I am. It’s the foundation for my practice model.

Affordable monthly membership plans for individuals and families. Whole families can now get their spines checked on a regular basis for the rest of their lives. The whole family can reap the benefits of regular chiropractic care from this day forward.

No, you don’t have to see a chiropractor forever. You can stop whenever you want. However, your life will be much better if you make it a part of your routine health habits. I can’t force you to do anything; all I can do is try to educate on the importance of chiropractic care, and then make it accessible. The rest is up to you.

Until next time,

Dr. Jen
